Master Your Shopping Totals

The price on the tag is rarely the price you pay at the register. Our Sales Tax Calculator helps you plan your purchases by accurately calculating the final total, including state and local taxes. We also offer a Reverse Tax feature, perfect for business owners who need to back out tax from a gross receipt.

What is Sales Tax?

Sales tax is a consumption tax imposed by the government on the sale of goods and services. In the United States, it is usually calculated as a percentage of the purchase price and collected by the retailer at the point of sale.

Unlike VAT (Value Added Tax) in Europe, which is included in the sticker price, US sales tax is added on top of the listed price. This often leads to "sticker shock" at checkout.

How to Use This Tool

This calculator works in two directions:

  • Standard Mode (Add Tax): Enter the "Before Tax Price" and "Tax Rate". We will show you the Tax Amount and the Grand Total.
  • Reverse Mode (Remove Tax): Enter the "Total Price" (what you paid) and the "Tax Rate". We will calculate the original price (Net Price) before tax was added.

Major Purchases

Buying a car or laptop? A 9% sales tax on a $30,000 car adds $2,700 to the price. Calculate it beforehand so you have the funds ready.

Freelancers

If you charge clients a flat rate inclusive of tax, use the reverse calculator to see how much revenue you actually keep vs. how much you owe the state.

Travel

Shopping in a different state? Check the local tax rate to see if it's worth making a big purchase while traveling to save money.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the formula for sales tax?

Total Price = Net Price × (1 + (Tax Rate / 100)).
Example: $50 × 1.05 = $52.50.

How do I verify a tax calculation?

Take your receipt, find the subtotal, multiply it by the local tax rate, and compare the result to the "Tax" line item.

Is sales tax the same as VAT?

Conceptually yes (they are both usage taxes), but practically no. Sales tax is added at the end, while VAT is built into every stage of production and included in the final display price.

Are groceries taxable?

In many states, essential groceries are exempt from sales tax, though prepared hot foods are often taxed.
