More Than Just a Number
Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is the single most important metric in your academic career. It determines scholarship eligibility, graduate school admissions, and even your first job prospects.
But calculating it manually is tedious. You have to convert letters to numbers, multiply by credit hours, sum it all up, and divide. Our GPA Calculator automates this process, letting you simulate "what-if" scenarios ("If I get an A in Chemistry, what happens to my cumulative GPA?").
How GPA is Calculated
The math creates a "weighted average" based on class duration/importance (credits).
1. Grade Points
Most schools use the 4.0 scale:
A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.
2. Quality Points
Multiply the Grade Point by the Credit Hours.
An 'A' in a 3-credit class = 4.0 × 3 = 12 Quality Points.
3. The Formula
Total Quality Points / Total Credit Hours = GPA
4. Cumulative
To find your overall GPA, you add the new semester's points to your previous total points and divide by the new total credits.
Academic Probation
Students at risk often need to know exactly what grades they need to reach a 2.0 minimum to avoid suspension.
Honors Tracking
Cum Laude often requires a 3.5. Summa Cum Laude might be 3.9. Use the tool to see if you can mathematically reach that goal.
Sports Eligibility
NCAA and high school sports require minimum GPAs to play. Athletes use this to ensure they stay eligible for the season.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an 'F' count?
Yes. An F gives you 0 quality points but still adds to your total credit hours, essentially dragging your average down significantly. Retaking the class often replaces the grade.
What about Pass/Fail classes?
Usually, Pass/Fail classes do not impact your GPA. They give you credits but no grade points. Check your specific university policy.
Why is my GPA weighted?
High schools often weight Honors (+0.5) or AP (+1.0) classes to reward difficulty. A 'B' in AP Physics might calculate like an 'A' in regular Physics.
